A Beer Drinker’s Guide to the 2011 MLB Postseason: Yankees and Tigers

New York Yankees – The Bronx Brewery (Bronx, NY)

I’ve been waiting all summer for this. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m proud to announce that we have a brewery right in the very borough that the Yanks call home, just in time for their postseason run. The Bronx Brewery is open for business and has started shipping their flagship Pale Ale to bars around NYC:

Bronx Pale Ale is a unique version of the traditional American-style pale ale. “What really distinguishes the beer is its freshness, the strength and complexity of its caramel, biscuit, and nutty malt flavors, and its focus on hop flavor and aroma rather than the extreme bitterness found in many American pale ales and IPAs.”

“Pure Finesse! Finally a pale ale that tight rope walks the balance of hops and malt,” says Gianni Cavicchi, Beverage Manager and Sommelier at Café D’Alsace and founder of BeerSomm.com.

At 6.3% ABV it’s gonna be bolder than your typical Pale Ale, but well balanced between 5 malts that “provide a complex blend of nutty, caramel and biscuit flavors, giving the beer substantial mouthfeel and backbone” and four varieties of hops, including Cascade and Centennial, that give it a “robust aroma with predominant grapefruit and earthy notes.”

Right now it’s available on draft at select bars throughout the Bronx and Manhattan, but will be shipping in bottles soon for your home enjoyment.

Detroit Tigers – Founders Brewing Company (Grand Rapids, MI)

The Tigers weren’t exactly the preseason pick to run away with the AL Central. Only four out of 45 ESPN “experts” picked the Tigers, with most choosing the White Sox and a smattering of votes for the Twins. But that’s okay. Founders Brewing Company, out of Grand Rapids, MI, doesn’t do things the way everyone else does either.

“We don’t brew beer for the masses. Instead, our beers are crafted for a chosen few, a small cadre of renegades and rebels who enjoy a beer that pushes the limits of what is commonly accepted as taste. In short, we make beer for people like us.”

I die for their Centennial IPA, but I’m going to go with something a little atypical here in the Red’s Rye PA. – one of my favorite beers not just from Founders but any craft brewer. If you’ve never tried a rye ale, this is the one to start with:

Serious hop bitterness, along with an unyielding grapefruit bouquet from the Amarillo dry-hop, balances the malty richness of four varieties of imported Belgian caramel malts. Pours a spectacular crimson with a creamy tan head. A generous addition of rye malt accentuates a spicy, crisp finish.

Need something with a little more pop to overpower the hoards of Yankees fans in your face? Take a sip of the Dirty Bastard and let your tastebuds do the talking:

So good it’s almost wrong. Dark ruby in color and brewed with seven varieties of imported malts. Complex in finish, with hints of smoke and peat, paired with a malty richness and a right hook of hop power to give it the bad attitude that a beer named Dirty Bastard has to live up to. Ain’t for the wee lads.
